In this post I will help you understand the difference between focal lengths (from 10mm - 400mm)
our lens focal length affects the angle of view you can see through your cameras viewfinder. To really see the difference focal length can make to the angle of view. It's good to compare a sequence of shots of the same subject taken at different focal lengths. You can check out some really good telephoto lenses here. I posted some examples below for hot much or how little of the scene you can capture in your frame, depending on your effective focal length (EFL).

As you can see, Focal length is essentially just a zoom feature on a camera. But it is important to understand what situations you would use each focal length for.
Interiors and Landscapes
When taking photos of interiors and landscapes, its a common practice to use a wide angle lens that's approximately 14 - 35mm. This allows you to get the largest area into the picture.

Photographing in Low light and Shallow Depth of Field
Its fine to use a standard lens when photographing in low light or with a shallow depth of field because they are the closest to the angle of view we see. There is minimal to 0 distortion giving the subject a glow of realism. To allow the most amount of light into the lens you should also use a large aperture. (f/1.8 - f/1/4)

Photographing Portraits and Wildlife
I always use telephoto lenses when photographing sports and wildlife which have a focal length of approximately 70-200mm. Both with portraits and wildlife it allows you to keep your distance from the subject while at the same time get a nice close up shot.

Photographing Sports and Wildlife
If you have a big budget and your looking for a rally kick ass camera, then you should have a look at some super telephoto lenses. These lenses are typically 300-600mm, its basically a telescope that takes pictures. They give you a great range for sports, when you are limited to the closeness of the subject.

Photographing Nature and Products
When photographing nature its best to use a Macro lens. These lenses give you top notch quality and allow you to get up real close while keeping the image in focus. Macro lenses allow photographers to reproduce images at 1:1 production, also know as life-size ratio.
